Left Shark became a meme during the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show. Katy Perry headlined the February 1, 2015, performance, which featured two large shark-costumed dancers during “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls.”

The shark on the audience’s left performed noticeably different, seemingly offbeat moves from Right Shark. Clips and screenshots spread rapidly across Twitter, Facebook, and news sites, turning the character into one of the show’s defining viral moments. The dancer was later identified as Bryan Gaw; Scott Myrick performed as Right Shark.

A common mix-up is confusing Super Bowl XLIX with the Roman-numeral editions immediately around it. XLIX means 49, while Super Bowl L was the following game in 2016. Another misconception is that Left Shark simply forgot the choreography. Choreographer RJ Durell said the dancers were given room to interpret the characters, so the apparently awkward routine was intentional rather than a genuine mistake.
