Green Day recorded Kerplunk at Art of Ears Studios in May and September 1991, working with producer and engineer Andy Ernst. The inexpensive San Francisco facility suited the band’s independent-label circumstances and was part of the Bay Area punk network that shaped Green Day’s early career.

The sessions were interrupted after six songs because the band had to return to touring. Green Day later abandoned the initial demos, went back to Art of Ears in September, and completed the album in a concentrated four-day period. Kerplunk was released by Lookout Records on December 17, 1991.

The album is especially important in the group’s history because it was the first Green Day album to feature drummer Tré Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer. Its growing success helped establish the band before Dookie took them to a major label and worldwide audiences. Ocean Way, Hyde Street, and Studio 880 are Bay Area recording names that can sound plausible, but they were not the credited studio for Kerplunk. Art of Ears also appears in the band’s earlier recording history, including 39/Smooth and the 1,000 Hours EP.
