At which railway station did Leo Tolstoy die in 1910?

The story behind the answer

Leo Tolstoy died at Astapovo railway station in 1910.

In November 1910, Tolstoy left home during a period of family conflict and personal distress. He became ill with pneumonia while travelling by train and stopped at Astapovo, a small railway station in the Ryazan area. The stationmaster gave him accommodation, and doctors attempted to treat him there.

Tolstoy died on 20 November 1910, aged 82. News of his illness attracted journalists, officials, admirers, and members of the public. His final days became an international event because he was one of the world’s most famous living writers.

Astapovo was later renamed Lev Tolstoy in his honour. The event is sometimes confused with the place of his burial: Tolstoy was buried at Yasnaya Polyana, not at the railway station. His death therefore links two important locations in his biography—Astapovo, where he died, and Yasnaya Polyana, where he was buried.
