At which palace was Mahatma Gandhi detained during the Quit India Movement from 1942 to 1944?

The story behind the answer

Mahatma Gandhi was detained at Aga Khan Palace during the Quit India Movement from 1942 to 1944.

The British government arrested Gandhi and other Congress leaders shortly after the Quit India resolution of August 1942. Gandhi was held at Aga Khan Palace in Pune, then commonly called Poona, rather than in an ordinary prison.

His wife, Kasturba Gandhi, died there on 22 February 1944. Mahadev Desai, Gandhi’s secretary, had also died at the palace in August 1942. Both are commemorated at the site, which later became a national memorial.

The palace is sometimes confused with Yerwada Central Jail, where Gandhi was imprisoned at other points. Aga Khan Palace is especially associated with the final major imprisonment of Gandhi and with Kasturba’s death.
