At which Oxford college did J.R.R. Tolkien serve as a fellow and tutor from 1925?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien served as a fellow and tutor at Pembroke College, Oxford, beginning in 1925.

He joined Pembroke after being appointed Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon. During his years there, he taught students, pursued medieval linguistic research, and developed important parts of his fictional mythology.

Tolkien wrote The Hobbit while at Pembroke, and the college period also saw the early development of stories and ideas that would later contribute to The Lord of the Rings. He remained at Pembroke until 1945, when he moved to Merton College.

The college is sometimes misidentified because Tolkien’s later Oxford position was at Merton. He became Merton’s Professor of English Language and Literature in 1945 and remained there until retiring in 1959. Pembroke, however, is the college most closely associated with the writing of The Hobbit.
