At which Oxford college did C.S. Lewis teach from 1925?
Answer
Magdalen College
Answer
Magdalen College
C.S. Lewis taught at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1925.
He was elected to a fellowship and tutorship in English at Magdalen in 1925, beginning the Oxford phase of his academic career. Lewis remained associated with the college for nearly three decades, teaching students, conducting tutorials, and writing many of his major works there.
Magdalen College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. Its grounds include the River Cherwell and a famous deer park, features that formed part of the environment Lewis knew while living and working in Oxford.
Lewis later moved to Cambridge University in 1954, becoming the first holder of the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The similar names can cause confusion: his Oxford college was Magdalen, without the final “e,” while the Cambridge college is Magdalene, with an “e.”
