At which Oxford college did C.S. Lewis teach and serve as a fellow for most of his career?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis taught and served as a fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford, for most of his academic career.

Lewis was elected to a fellowship at Magdalen College in 1925 and remained there until 1954. He taught English literature and developed a reputation as a demanding but influential tutor. The college’s medieval buildings, gardens, and wooded grounds also became an important part of his daily life in Oxford.

In 1954, Lewis left Magdalen after being appointed the first holder of the English Literature chair at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The two colleges are easy to confuse because their names differ by only one letter: Magdalen is in Oxford, while Magdalene is in Cambridge.

Lewis’s Oxford years overlapped with his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien and other members of the Inklings, an informal literary discussion group.
