At which Oxford church is C.S. Lewis buried?
Answer
Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry
Answer
Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry
C.S. Lewis is buried at Holy Trinity Church in Headington Quarry, Oxford.
Lewis died on 22 November 1963, the same day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and Aldous Huxley died. He was buried in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry, an Anglican church in an eastern suburb of Oxford. His brother Warren Lewis was later buried nearby.
The churchyard became a place of literary pilgrimage because it contains Lewis’s grave and is associated with the final chapter of his life. Lewis had lived at The Kilns, a house near Headington, for many years. The location therefore connects his burial place with the Oxford neighborhood where he wrote and entertained friends.
The grave is not at Christ Church, the Oxford college often linked with famous literary figures, nor at Magdalen College, where Lewis taught. Those institutions were important to his career, but Holy Trinity Church is the specific burial location.
