At which London theatre did Groundhog Day the musical premiere in 2016? It premiered at The Old Vic.
The musical had its world premiere at London’s Old Vic in 2016, during Matthew Warchus’s first season as the theatre’s artistic director. Preview performances began in July, and the official opening followed on 16 August 2016. Andy Karl played Phil Connors, the cynical television weatherman trapped in a repeating day.
The production was created by Tim Minchin, who wrote the music and lyrics, and Danny Rubin, who wrote the book. Rubin had also co-written the screenplay for the 1993 film with Harold Ramis. The stage adaptation therefore retained the film’s central premise while expanding its characters, themes and musical storytelling.
A common mix-up is the later Broadway production, which opened at the August Wilson Theatre in New York in 2017. That was a transfer, not the original premiere. The Old Vic also hosted a London revival in 2023.
