At which French city was Joan of Arc examined by clerics before Charles VII accepted her?

The story behind the answer

Joan of Arc was examined by clerics at Poitiers before Charles VII accepted her into the French war effort.

The examination took place in 1429 after Joan reached the dauphin’s court. Charles and his advisers wanted to assess her claims, character, and religious orthodoxy before allowing her to accompany the army. The inquiry was not the same as her later condemnation trial at Rouen.

The clerical investigation reportedly considered her reputation, her visions, and her conduct. It did not produce a formal theological endorsement of every claim she made, but it cleared the way for her practical participation. She was then equipped and sent toward the campaign at Orléans.

Poitiers is therefore an important middle point in Joan’s story: Vaucouleurs relates to her journey to the court, Poitiers to her examination, and Rouen to her later trial. Surviving evidence about the inquiry is incomplete, so some details come from later testimony.
