At which Cambridge college did C.S. Lewis serve as a Fellow from 1954?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis served as a Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, from 1954.

Before moving to Cambridge, Lewis spent most of his academic career at the University of Oxford, where he was a Fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, Oxford. In 1954, he accepted the newly established Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge. His Cambridge fellowship was at Magdalene College, whose name is pronounced like “Maudlin.”

The similar names of Magdalen College at Oxford and Magdalene College at Cambridge cause frequent confusion. They are separate colleges at separate universities. Lewis’s academic appointment at Cambridge allowed him to continue his work on medieval and Renaissance literature while also writing widely read books on Christianity, imagination, and ethics.

Lewis remained connected with Magdalene College until his death in 1963. The college therefore forms an important part of the later chapter of his academic career, distinct from his much longer Oxford association.
