At which Cambridge college did C.S. Lewis hold his final academic post?
Answer
Magdalene College
Answer
Magdalene College
C.S. Lewis held his final academic post at Magdalene College, Cambridge. In 1954 he became the first professor of medieval and Renaissance literature at Cambridge and was elected a fellow of Magdalene College.
Lewis had previously spent nearly three decades at Magdalen College, Oxford, as a fellow and tutor. The similar names of the Oxford and Cambridge colleges create a frequent source of error: Oxford has Magdalen, pronounced “Maudlin,” while Cambridge has Magdalene, pronounced “Maudlin” as well.
At Cambridge, Lewis continued writing and teaching while living in the area with his brother Warren. He remained associated with Magdalene College until his death in 1963. The Cambridge appointment came after Oxford reorganized its English faculty and did not renew his fellowship.
