At which Cambridge college did C.S. Lewis hold a fellowship after moving to Cambridge?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis held a fellowship at Magdalene College, Cambridge, after moving to the university.

Lewis became a Fellow and tutor in English at Magdalene College in 1954, when he was appointed to the Cambridge Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English. He had previously spent most of his academic career at Oxford, especially at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he taught English literature.

The two colleges are easy to confuse because their names are nearly identical. Lewis’s Oxford college was Magdalen, pronounced “Maudlin,” while his Cambridge college was Magdalene, traditionally pronounced “Maudlin” as well. The Cambridge appointment gave him a formal academic position at the university where he spent the final years of his teaching career.

Lewis remained associated with Magdalene College, Cambridge, until his retirement in 1963. His move did not end his connection with Oxford, where he continued to have long-standing personal and scholarly ties.
