At which Cambridge college did C.S. Lewis become a fellow and teach English?
Answer
Magdalene College
Answer
Magdalene College
C.S. Lewis became a fellow and taught English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He moved there in 1954 after spending most of his academic career at Oxford.
At Oxford, Lewis had been a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, University of Oxford, from 1925. Cambridge appointed him to the newly created chair of Medieval and Renaissance English, a position he held until his retirement in 1963.
The two colleges have similar names but belong to different universities: Magdalen College is in Oxford, while Magdalene College is in Cambridge. This spelling and university distinction is a frequent source of confusion.
Lewis continued writing and lecturing at Cambridge, although his reputation as a Christian author and popular speaker had already spread far beyond academic circles. He died in Oxford on 22 November 1963, during his Cambridge tenure.
