Freestyle moguls became an official Olympic medal sport at Albertville 1992 in France.
Moguls had appeared as a demonstration event at Calgary 1988, alongside aerials. At Albertville, moguls received full medal status, making it the first freestyle skiing discipline officially contested at the Winter Olympics.
In moguls, athletes ski down a course covered with large bumps, perform two required jumps and are judged on turns, jumps and speed. The discipline therefore combines technical control with acrobatic movement rather than simply measuring finish time.
Aerials also became an official medal event at Lillehammer 1994. Ski cross arrived much later, at Vancouver 2010. These different debut dates are why “freestyle skiing’s Olympic debut” can refer to several milestones depending on whether demonstration or medal competition is meant.
