At what age did Anne Brontë die?

The story behind the answer

Anne Brontë died at the age of 29, on 28 May 1849, after suffering from tuberculosis.

Anne was born on 17 January 1820, so she had not yet reached her thirtieth birthday when she died. She travelled with Charlotte to the coastal town of Scarborough in the hope that the sea air might help her worsening illness, but her health continued to decline. She was buried in St Mary’s churchyard in Scarborough.

Anne was the youngest of the three Brontë sisters and wrote under the pen name Acton Bell. Her first novel, *Agnes Grey*, was published in 1847, the same year as Emily’s *Wuthering Heights*. Her second novel, *The Tenant of Wildfell Hall*, appeared in 1848 and challenged contemporary expectations about marriage, domestic abuse, and women’s independence.

The surrounding ages can cause confusion because Emily Brontë died at 30, while Charlotte lived to 38. Anne’s death came only months after Emily’s and during the same period in which Charlotte was completing *Shirley*, making 1848–49 a devastating chapter in the Brontë family story.
