At the 1999 Academy Awards, which category earned Disney’s Mulan a nomination?

The story behind the answer

Disney’s Mulan received a 1999 Academy Award nomination for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.

The nomination recognized Jerry Goldsmith’s score for the 1998 animated film. At the time, the Academy’s music categories distinguished between dramatic scores and musical or comedy scores, and the category was officially titled Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.

Mulan did not win the award. The Oscar went to Shakespeare in Love, whose score was composed by Stephen Warbeck. Mulan’s nomination is also separate from the Academy’s Best Original Song category: the film was not nominated for an Oscar for “Reflection.”

This award history is sometimes confused with the later Best Animated Feature category. The Academy introduced that category for the 2001 ceremony, so Mulan could not have competed there at the 1999 ceremony.
