At the 1999 Academy Awards, Disney’s animated film Mulan won no Oscars.
Mulan received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for “Reflection,” with music by Matthew Wilder and lyrics by David Zippel. The nomination gave the film recognition at the 71st Academy Awards, but the movie did not win in that category or any other category.
The result is sometimes misremembered because “Reflection” became one of Disney’s best-known songs and because Mulan received several other honors and nominations. Recognition from organizations such as the Annie Awards is separate from the Academy Awards and does not change the Oscar result.
The film’s Academy Award nomination also involved the song’s credited writers, not the performers who recorded the film’s vocals. Lea Salonga sings Mulan’s vocal performance in the movie, while Christina Aguilera recorded a pop version for the soundtrack.
