At Peru’s Inti Raymi festival, where is the main modern ceremony performed?
Answer
Sacsayhuamán
Answer
Sacsayhuamán
The main modern ceremony of Peru’s Inti Raymi festival is performed at Sacsayhuamán.
Sacsayhuamán is an Inca archaeological complex on the hills above Cusco. During the modern festival, the ceremony moves through several symbolic locations, including Cusco’s historic center, before reaching the large ceremonial area at Sacsayhuamán.
Inti Raymi was revived in 1944 as a public celebration inspired by Inca descriptions and colonial accounts. The event honors Inti, the Inca sun deity, and takes place around the June solstice. Sacsayhuamán is not Machu Picchu: Machu Picchu is a separate Inca site much farther from Cusco and is not the principal venue for the modern Inti Raymi performance.
