At Le Mans, the overall winner is the car that covers the greatest distance.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans is an endurance race: cars compete for a full day, and the winner is determined by completing the most distance during the timed event. That distance is measured through the number of completed laps of the Circuit de la Sarthe, with the finishing order determined after the race ends.
This is different from a sprint race, where the winner is usually the first driver to complete a fixed number of laps. A car may have the fastest lap or the highest top speed yet still lose if it spends more time in the pits, suffers mechanical trouble, or completes fewer laps. Fuel economy matters strategically, but it is not the winning criterion.
Le Mans also awards separate class victories, so several cars can be winners within their categories. The overall winner, however, is the highest-placed car across the field based on completed race distance.
