The game takes place in ninth-century Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age, with the city serving as the main hub for protagonist Basim Ibn Ishaq. Players explore districts, markets, rooftops, and landmarks while Basim investigates the Hidden Ones and the Order, the organizations that frame the game's conflict.
Mirage is designed as a more compact, stealth-focused Assassin's Creed experience than several of the large open-world RPG entries that preceded it. Its historical setting connects Basim's personal story with Baghdad's intellectual, political, and commercial importance under the Abbasid Caliphate.
Baghdad can be confused with other major cities in the franchise. Damascus is one of the principal cities in the original Assassin's Creed, Alexandria is central to Assassin's Creed Origins, and Constantinople is the principal setting of Assassin's Creed Revelations. Mirage also includes locations beyond Baghdad, but the historic city is its defining setting.
