The game was released in 2013 and follows Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer who becomes involved with both pirates and the Assassin-Templar conflict. Its historical campaign is set during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early eighteenth century.

Players sail across a large Caribbean world containing islands, coastal settlements, and major cities. Havana, Kingston, and Nassau are among the best-known locations. Naval travel and ship combat are central features, with Edward commanding the Jackdaw.

The region can be confused with the setting of Assassin's Creed Rogue, which focuses more heavily on the North Atlantic. Black Flag does include areas outside open Caribbean waters, but its identity is defined by Caribbean piracy, maritime exploration, and the ports of the West Indies.
