Apia is the capital of which Oceanian country?

The story behind the answer

Apia is the capital of Samoa, an island country in Polynesia in the South Pacific.

The city lies on the central north coast of Upolu, Samoa’s second-largest island, and serves as the country’s political, commercial, and cultural center. Government institutions, the Parliament House, ministries, the main harbor, and many historic buildings are concentrated in and around the Apia urban area.

Apia developed as a settlement and port during the 19th century and became Samoa’s capital in 1959, after the country moved toward independence from colonial administration. Mulinuʻu, at the western end of the city, remains an important ceremonial and governmental area and is associated with Samoa’s traditional political history.

A frequent confusion is between Samoa and American Samoa. Apia is the capital of the independent nation of Samoa; Pago Pago is the capital of the U.S. territory of American Samoa. Apia also sits on Upolu, while Samoa’s largest island, Savaiʻi, lies to the northwest.
