America250 commemorates the 250th anniversary of which founding document?

America250 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, 1776, announcing that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as independent states rather than part of the British Empire. The document explained the colonies’ political position and presented arguments for separation.

Thomas Jefferson drafted most of the text, with editing and contributions from John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston. Congress debated and revised the draft before approving it. The famous parchment was signed by delegates over a period beginning on August 2, 1776, rather than by every delegate on July 4.

The Declaration is often confused with the Constitution, which established the framework of the federal government in 1787, and the Articles of Confederation, which served as the first U.S. constitution. America250’s central anniversary link is the 1776 declaration of independence.
