Which coin showed a colonial drummer on its reverse for the 1976 U.S. Bicentennial?
Answer
Washington quarter
Answer
Washington quarter
The Washington quarter showed a colonial drummer on its reverse for the 1976 United States Bicentennial. Jack L. Ahr designed the image, which places the drummer beside a torch and thirteen stars.
The temporary quarter design was one of three circulating commemorative reverses authorized for the Bicentennial. The Kennedy half dollar displayed Independence Hall, while the Eisenhower dollar showed the Liberty Bell over the Moon. Each coin also carried the dual date 1776–1976.
The quarter was especially familiar because quarters circulated widely in everyday transactions. The United States Mint struck enormous quantities in both 1975 and 1976, so the coins remain common rather than rare despite their commemorative appearance.
The colonial drummer is sometimes associated with the famous painting The Spirit of ’76. The coin design drew on that patriotic visual tradition, but it is not simply a reproduction of the painting. The original Washington quarter portrait remained on the obverse.
