Alphabet, the parent company of Google, was created in 2015 after Google reorganized under what name?

The story behind the answer

Alphabet Inc. was created in 2015 when Google reorganized its corporate structure.

Google announced the restructuring on August 10, 2015, and Alphabet became the successor holding company on October 2, 2015. Under the new arrangement, Alphabet owned Google and several other businesses, while Google focused mainly on internet products and services such as Search, advertising, YouTube, and Android.

Larry Page became Alphabet's chief executive, Sergey Brin became its president, and Sundar Pichai became Google's chief executive. In December 2019, Pichai also became Alphabet's CEO, while Page and Brin stepped away from their executive roles.

The change did not mean that Google disappeared. Google remained Alphabet's largest operating company, and the name Alphabet refers to the broader parent corporation. Alphabet's structure was designed to separate Google's core internet businesses from longer-term projects and other subsidiaries.
