Alphabet, Google’s parent company, was created in 2015.
Google announced the Alphabet restructuring on August 10, 2015, and the new corporate structure took effect later that year. Under the arrangement, Alphabet became the parent company while Google became its largest subsidiary, continuing to operate its search, advertising, maps, YouTube, and Android businesses.
The restructuring separated Google’s core internet operations from other projects, including life sciences, self-driving technology, and investment businesses. Larry Page became Alphabet’s chief executive officer, while Sergey Brin became its president. Sundar Pichai became Google’s CEO.
Alphabet’s creation did not mean that Google disappeared as a consumer brand. Instead, it created a holding-company structure intended to give individual businesses greater independence and clearer financial reporting. Alphabet’s advertising, cloud, and technology businesses have made it one of the companies most often found near the top of global market-cap rankings.
