According to the Old Testament, a donkey spoke to Balaam.
In Numbers 22, Balaam was travelling when his donkey saw an angel blocking the road. Balaam could not see the angel and struck the animal three times when it refused to continue.
The text then says that God opened the donkey’s mouth, allowing it to question Balaam. Afterward, Balaam’s eyes were opened and he saw the angel. The episode warns Balaam that he must speak only the message God gives him.
The story is often known as “Balaam’s donkey” or “Balaam’s ass,” because older English translations commonly use “ass” for donkey. It is the donkey, not a horse or mule, that speaks in the biblical account.
