According to the Old Testament, Evil-merodach released King Jehoiachin from prison.
The event is recorded at the end of 2 Kings and in Jeremiah. Jehoiachin, king of Judah, had been taken to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar II. In the thirty-seventh year of Jehoiachin’s exile, Evil-merodach became king of Babylon and brought him out of prison.
The Babylonian king treated Jehoiachin favorably, gave him a seat above other captive kings, and supplied him with a regular allowance. This closing episode offers a small change in fortune for Judah’s former king during the exile.
Evil-merodach is the biblical form of the Babylonian name Amel-Marduk. He ruled Babylon after Nebuchadnezzar II and before Nabonidus, although the Old Testament uses the name Evil-merodach.
