According to 1 Kings, Solomon reigned over Israel for 40 years.
Solomon succeeded David as king and is presented in the Old Testament as a ruler renowned for wisdom, wealth, and major building projects. The First Book of Kings states that he ruled over all Israel in Jerusalem for four decades before dying and being buried in the City of David.
Solomon’s reign is associated with the construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, the royal palace, and other fortified or administrative centers. The biblical narrative also describes extensive international trade and diplomatic relationships, including his connection with the Queen of Sheba.
Solomon’s son Rehoboam succeeded him. After Rehoboam’s accession, the united kingdom split into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Solomon’s 40-year reign is separate from the seven years traditionally attributed to David’s rule in Hebron before he ruled over all Israel.
