According to Genesis, who was Noah’s father before the Flood?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s father before the Flood was Lamech.

Genesis 5 gives Noah’s genealogy through the line of Seth. Lamech is listed as the son of Methuselah and the father of Noah. In the biblical account, Lamech named his son Noah and connected the name with relief from the difficult labor caused by the cursed ground.

Lamech in Noah’s genealogy is not the same person as the Lamech mentioned earlier in Genesis 4, who belongs to Cain’s line. This repeated name is a common source of confusion. Noah later becomes the central human survivor of the Flood narrative and is described as the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
