According to Genesis, which three sons of Noah survived the Flood with him?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Shem, Ham, and Japheth survived the Flood with Noah.

Genesis 7:13 names Noah’s three sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth when they enter the ark with Noah, Noah’s wife, and their wives. Genesis 9:18 repeats the names after the Flood and identifies these three men as Noah’s sons. Their presence establishes the family group that survives the catastrophe in the biblical narrative.

The sons are important beyond the ark story. Genesis 10, traditionally called the Table of Nations, presents genealogical lines associated with Shem, Ham, and Japheth. These lists connect the sons to peoples and regions known to the biblical writers, although modern historians and population geneticists do not treat the genealogy as a scientific classification of all humanity.

The names are sometimes mixed up with later patriarchs. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob belong to a much later part of Genesis, while Cain, Abel, and Seth are sons of Adam and Eve. Noah’s sons are specifically the three adult male family members named as entering the ark with him.
