According to Genesis, what were the dimensions of Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark measured 300 by 50 by 30 cubits.

Genesis gives the ark’s dimensions in cubits, an ancient unit of length, rather than in modern metres or feet. The measurements are 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. The text also describes the vessel as having rooms, three levels, a door in its side, and a window or opening near the top.

Because the exact length of a cubit varied across ancient cultures and periods, modern conversions are approximate. Using common estimates, the ark would have been several hundred feet long, making the biblical description a very large ship for its setting. The proportions are often compared with those of a large barge rather than a fast, ocean-going vessel.

These dimensions belong to the Genesis account and should not be confused with measurements proposed for modern replicas. Replica projects use different materials, engineering standards, and interpretations of the cubit.
