According to Genesis, what was the length of Noah’s Ark in cubits?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark was 300 cubits long.

Genesis 6:15 gives the ark’s three main dimensions as 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width, and 30 cubits in height. A cubit was an ancient unit based broadly on the length of a forearm, so its exact modern equivalent varied. Using commonly cited estimates, 300 cubits is roughly 135 metres, or about 450 feet, but the conversion is approximate.

The biblical dimensions describe a very long, box-like vessel rather than a conventional ship designed for speed or navigation. Genesis says the ark was intended to preserve life during the flood, not to sail to a destination under human control. Its proportions also help explain why later artists often depict it as a large rectangular barge.

The 300-cubit figure is distinct from the ark’s width and height. Confusing the three numbers can produce incorrect answers: Genesis lists 300 by 50 by 30 cubits, in that order.
