According to Genesis, the dove brought Noah an olive leaf after leaving the Ark.
Genesis 8 says Noah sent the dove out again after an earlier flight had shown that the waters were still covering the ground. The dove returned toward evening with a freshly plucked olive leaf, giving Noah evidence that vegetation had reappeared and that the floodwaters were receding. Noah waited another seven days before sending the dove out once more; it then did not return.
The olive leaf became a widely recognized symbol of peace, reconciliation, and hope. That symbolism developed beyond the immediate biblical scene and appears in later Jewish, Christian, and secular art. The text specifically says “olive leaf,” not an olive branch, although “dove with an olive branch” is the familiar modern expression. The detail also distinguishes the dove episode from the earlier raven episode in the same chapter.
