According to Genesis, how many stories did Noah’s Ark have?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark had three stories.

Genesis 6:16 describes the vessel as having lower, second, and third decks. The same verse mentions a window or opening and a door in the ark’s side. These details present the ark as a large, enclosed structure organized vertically into multiple levels rather than as a simple open boat.

Translations differ slightly in how they render the opening, and the text does not provide a modern architectural blueprint. It also does not specify how the animals were distributed among the decks. Artists and filmmakers have therefore had considerable freedom when depicting the interior. The number of levels, however, is explicit in the Genesis description: there were three stories. This detail is distinct from the ark’s other dimensions, which Genesis gives as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.
