According to Genesis, how many people were saved inside Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, eight people were saved inside Noah’s Ark.

The eight were Noah, his wife, their three sons, and the three sons’ wives. Genesis 7:13 names the family members entering the Ark, while later biblical passages summarize Noah’s household as eight people preserved through the Flood. The account does not give the women’s personal names.

This number is separate from the animals brought aboard. Genesis describes Noah’s family and the animals as two different groups, which is why illustrations showing a large community on the Ark do not match the specific family count in the text.

The number eight also appears in the New Testament, where 1 Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being saved through water. The figure is therefore repeated across biblical books, although the Ark story itself is found principally in Genesis chapters 6–9.
