According to Genesis, how long did rain fall during the Flood in Noah’s time?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, rain fell during Noah’s Flood for forty days and forty nights.

Genesis 7:12 states that rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights after Noah, his family, and the animals entered the ark. The number forty is a recurring biblical time period, also appearing in stories involving testing, preparation, and transformation.

The forty-day rainfall should not be confused with the total duration of the Flood. Genesis separately says that the waters prevailed for 150 days, and the complete sequence—from the start of the rain until the ground was dry—lasted much longer than forty days.

The narrative also describes water coming from “the fountains of the great deep” and the “windows of heaven.” Thus, the text presents the rainfall as one part of a larger cataclysm rather than the entire source or full length of the Flood.
