According to Egyptian mythology, who was Anubis’s mother in the Osiris family tradition?

The story behind the answer

According to Egyptian mythology, Nephthys was Anubis’s mother in the Osiris family tradition.

In a widely known version of the Osiris myth, Nephthys gave birth to Anubis after disguising herself as Isis and conceiving him with Osiris. Nephthys was the sister and wife of Seth, while Osiris was her brother and the husband of Isis. Because of this complicated divine genealogy, Anubis is sometimes described as the son of Osiris and Nephthys.

The mythology is not completely uniform across all periods and texts. Some traditions treated Anubis as the son of Ra, or connected him with other divine parentage. The Osiris-and-Nephthys genealogy became especially prominent in later retellings of the funerary myth.

Nephthys also played a major protective role at funerals. She and Isis were often portrayed as mourning and guarding Osiris, which helped connect her with the protection of the dead and the care of mummies.
