Woodstock '99 was held at the former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York.

The festival ran from July 22 to 25, 1999, and used the largely unused former military installation as its venue. The site was roughly 100 miles northwest of the original 1969 Woodstock location in Bethel. The U.S. Air Force had closed the B-52 base in September 1995, leaving a vast industrial setting for the event.

Organizers chose the location partly because its perimeter seemed easier to secure against gate-crashing. They built a large plywood-and-steel barrier, nicknamed the “peace wall,” and planned extensive police coverage. The base also supplied unusual spaces, including aircraft hangars used for a rave stage and film screenings.

A common mix-up is confusing the venue with New York-area airports such as Hancock Field. Griffiss was not merely a nearby airport: it was the former air-base complex in Rome that hosted the festival.
