Joni Mitchell's own version of 'Woodstock' first appeared on which 1970 album?

Joni Mitchell’s own version of “Woodstock” first appeared on her 1970 album Ladies of the Canyon.

Mitchell wrote the song after hearing about the 1969 festival from Graham Nash, her partner at the time. She did not attend Woodstock herself; a television appearance kept her in New York, where she wrote the song while watching reports about the event.

Her recording is notably different from the famous Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version. Mitchell’s arrangement is slower and more intimate, centered on her voice and Wurlitzer electric piano. It appeared on Ladies of the Canyon in April 1970 and was also issued as the B-side of “Big Yellow Taxi.”

The main source of confusion is Déjà Vu, the 1970 CSNY album. That album contains the best-known rock interpretation of “Woodstock,” but it is not Mitchell’s own first album appearance. Blue is another nearby Joni Mitchell title, but it was released in 1971.
