Whose life inspired the original TV story behind The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air?

The story behind the answer

The original TV story behind The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was inspired by the life of Benny Medina. Medina was a music executive and television producer whose difficult childhood and later move into a wealthy Beverly Hills environment provided the show's basic premise.

Medina grew up poor in East Los Angeles. As a teenager, he befriended a wealthy white student whose family lived in Beverly Hills and allowed Medina to live with them. The contrast between his working-class upbringing and an affluent household became the foundation for the series.

The sitcom changed important details. Medina's real-life wealthy hosts were white, but the television version centered on the affluent Black Banks family. That change allowed the creators to explore class differences and tensions within Black communities rather than repeat a familiar “poor minority child joins wealthy white family” setup.

Medina pitched the concept to Quincy Jones, who helped bring it to NBC. Andy and Susan Borowitz then developed the sitcom, while Will Smith became its star after an audition arranged through Jones.
