The Irish rock band launched the arena tour in May 2018 to support its 2017 album, Songs of Experience. The album continued the autobiographical themes introduced on 2014’s Songs of Innocence, and the tour developed that concept into a large-scale multimedia concert.
The tour was also a sequel to U2’s 2015 Innocence + Experience Tour. Its staging used a long, transparent video screen and a smaller performance platform, allowing the band to move between the main stage and the audience area. The setlist combined songs from Songs of Experience with older U2 material and several less frequently performed tracks.
A common mix-up is reversing the title: the 2015 tour was Innocence + Experience, while the 2018 sequel was Experience + Innocence. The unusual capitalization—eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE—was part of the tour’s official branding.
