Who wrote the songs and score for Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns?

The story behind the answer

Marc Shaiman wrote the songs and score for Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns.

Shaiman composed the film’s original musical numbers and instrumental score, with lyrics by Scott Wittman. Their songs include “Trip a Little Light Fantastic,” “Can You Imagine That?,” “A Cover Is Not the Book,” and “Where the Lost Things Go.”

The 2018 sequel stars Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins and takes place in London during the 1930s. It follows the grown Michael Banks and his children, while Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Jack, a lamplighter who assists Mary.

The project deliberately echoes the style of the 1964 Mary Poppins while creating new songs rather than simply reusing the original soundtrack. Shaiman’s work earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for “Where the Lost Things Go,” while the film also received nominations for its production design, costume design, and music.
