In Disney's Fantasia, Paul Dukas wrote the music for the Sorcerer's Apprentice segment.
Dukas composed “L'Apprenti sorcier,” usually known by its English title “The Sorcerer's Apprentice,” in 1897. Disney used the orchestral scherzo as the soundtrack for the segment in which Mickey Mouse, playing the apprentice, enchants a broom to do his work and then loses control of the spell.
The music was already a celebrated concert work before the film was made. Walt Disney originally planned the sequence as a standalone short, but it became the centerpiece of Fantasia, released in 1940. The segment is sometimes mistakenly credited to one of the film's other composers, such as Beethoven or Stravinsky, because Fantasia combines several classical works in a single feature.
