Who wrote the song "Tumbling Dice"?

“Tumbling Dice” was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

The song carries the standard Jagger–Richards songwriting credit and became the lead single from the Rolling Stones’ 1972 double album Exile on Main St. Its rolling, laid-back groove combines rock and roll, blues, and boogie-woogie influences, while the lyrics use gambling imagery to portray an unreliable, restless character.

Richards developed the famous guitar riff using five-string open-G tuning, a technique that became strongly associated with his playing. Jagger later completed the lyrics after speaking with a housekeeper in Los Angeles who enjoyed playing dice. The song’s basic track was recorded at Villa Nellcôte in southern France using the band’s Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, then finished at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles.

The recording process was unusually difficult. Engineers reportedly made dozens of attempts before the band achieved a satisfactory take, and producer Jimmy Miller played drums during the song’s closing section. The finished single was released on 14 April 1972, with “Sweet Black Angel” as its B-side.
