The song was written by Queen’s guitarist for the band’s fourth studio album, A Night at the Opera, released in 1975. May reportedly began shaping it after having a dream about a great flood while recovering from illness during the recording period for Sheer Heart Attack. That experience helped inspire the song’s prophetic imagery, which includes references associated with Noah’s Ark and other biblical themes.

At more than eight minutes, "The Prophet’s Song" is Queen’s longest song with vocals. Its scale and structure helped establish the progressive-rock side of A Night at the Opera, an album better known to casual listeners for "Bohemian Rhapsody."
