Who wrote the song "Immigrant Song"?

The story behind the answer

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote Led Zeppelin's song "Immigrant Song."

The song was written in 1970 after Led Zeppelin performed in Reykjavík, Iceland. Robert Plant drew on the trip's atmosphere and Norse imagery for lyrics about seafaring warriors, conquest, and Valhalla, while Jimmy Page created the song's instantly recognizable guitar riff. The track was recorded during sessions for Led Zeppelin III.

"Immigrant Song" opens with Plant's famous high-pitched vocal cry and a tightly repeating riff. It was released as a single in November 1970 and also became the opening track on Led Zeppelin III. The song is unusually short for the band, running for about two and a half minutes, but its forceful arrangement helped make it one of their signature recordings.

A frequent mistake is crediting the whole band equally as the songwriters. John Paul Jones and John Bonham performed on the recording, but the credited writers are Page and Plant. The song's Viking imagery also reflects artistic inspiration rather than a literal account of a specific historical raid.
