Freddie Mercury wrote the song “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Mercury was Queen’s lead singer and pianist, and he wrote the song for the band’s fourth studio album, A Night at the Opera. Released in 1975, it was unusually ambitious for a pop single: a six-minute suite combining an intimate ballad, an operatic passage, hard rock, and a reflective closing section.

Mercury reportedly developed the song from several musical ideas he had been working on. Queen recorded it with producer Roy Thomas Baker across five studios in August and September 1975. The band’s layered vocal harmonies and elaborate studio construction helped give the track its distinctive theatrical sound.

A common mistake is crediting the whole band equally because the record is performed by Queen and later releases often display a band-wide songwriting credit for other songs. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” however, is specifically credited to Freddie Mercury as its writer.
