Who wrote the screenplay for the romantic comedy Notting Hill?

The story behind the answer

Richard Curtis wrote the screenplay for the romantic comedy Notting Hill.

Released in 1999, the film stars Hugh Grant as William Thacker, a London bookseller, and Julia Roberts as Anna Scott, an internationally famous film star. Their relationship begins after she enters his shop in Notting Hill.

Roger Michell directed the film, which was produced by Duncan Kenworthy. Curtis was already known for writing British television and film comedies, including Four Weddings and a Funeral, before creating this story.

Notting Hill uses the contrast between celebrity life and an ordinary neighborhood to drive its romantic conflict. The film also became known for its travel-book shop, the blue door, and the line about being an ordinary person asking to be loved.
